What Is Engage Kiss About?
Engage Kiss, A-1 Picture’s relatively less popular original anime in the summer season, was still a good show in its own right. Anime fans say it started out pretty weak yet watchable, and slowly unraveled to reveal a deep story that instantly got its initially reluctant viewers hooked. The story centers on Shu Ogata, a resident of the fictional Bayron City in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. In this floating mega-city, there is an abundance of Orgonium, a money-making energy resource native to the city, and demons. D-Disasters, which is what incidents caused by demons are called, are handled by secretly operating special forces known as Private Military Companies or PMCs. Shu is the owner of a small PMC with only him and his girlfriend/demon partner, Kisara, as the sole employees. Shu makes use of his connections with ex-lover Yugiri Ayano to win bids for jobs, and Kisara’s power to subdue demons. From the outside, Shu is no more than an annoying deadbeat character who takes advantage of the feelings the girls around him have for him, without any effort whatsoever to make his life better on his own. But beneath this undesirable setup and the almost nonsensical harem that Shu enjoys lies a tragic situation that he could even eventually die from. It’s been revealed that Shu had left his old high-paying PMC role to set up his own company and seek revenge for his family. That in itself isn’t a fresh concept in anime, but it’s the method he is using that drives a punch to the gut. In order to seek out the demon responsible for Shu’s loss, he has to be in contract with Kisara. Unlike other demon-possessed people, he doesn’t sell his soul in one go. Instead, he gradually offers up his memories to Kisara, including precious ones he’d made with Ayano, through quite intense kisses, in exchange for her full power. This is a sacrifice Shu is willing to make if it meant finding answers someday, regardless of whether he’s hurting someone else along the way. At first glance, Engage Kiss is a pretty generic semi-harem where very capable girls can’t seem to get enough of an unlikable main character. Fortunately, its story is actually pretty good in that although Shu’s situation can’t justify his dishonest actions, we can at least understand his seemingly uncaring outlook on his own life and those of the people around him. It’s no surprise then that those who’ve stood by the show towards the end are clamoring for more. You Might Enjoy: Who Does Shu End Up With in Engage Kiss?
Will There Be an Engage Kiss Season 2?
As of writing, there has been no official confirmation yet about the release of Engage Kiss Season 2.
An anime usually gets renewed for a second season based on factors like its fan count and marketability.
Engage Kiss has not been as successful as Lycoris Recoil, another original A-1 Pictures anime of Summer 2022, so it might not be a good idea to count on the show getting a second season based on those factors.
Another thing to look at would be whether there is a source material to market that merits a new season.
While most anime shows are produced to promote their source manga, Engage Kiss is an original work that isn’t based on any existing story.
It is instead part of a multimedia project by Aniplex called Project Engage, which includes a Square Enix-developed mobile game called Engage Kill.
This means that although an official manga having been announced based on the anime could imply its popularity, Engage Kiss no longer has anything to promote, considering Season 1 had already served its purpose of promoting Project Engage.
With that said, there have been rumors of an Engage Kiss Season 2 getting released.
We say “rumors,” because there hasn’t been any official announcement or teaser about it yet other than a tweet by the show’s sound director, Takeshi Takadera, after the last episode aired on September 24:
A Tweet by known anime leaker Sneaky on July 17 states that a reliable source had leaked info about Engage Kiss being a split-cour with 13 episodes each.
But while all that sounds promising, it’s best to wait for official announcements before holding on to any hope.
