Despite the fact that we’ve now seen three live-action Star Wars TV shows since The Mandalorian Season 2 departed our screens - The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), and Andor (2022) - The Mandalorian remains the fan-favorite of the lot, and the most successful.
It’s the most iconic too, as Din Djarin/The Mandalorian (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu quickly became a recognizable duo all around the world. And now, following their reunion in The Book of Boba Fett, The Mandalorian Season 3 will see them embark on all-new adventures in the faraway galaxy.
And though it’s still a few months until we see them again, this year’ D23 Expo in Anaheim, California saw the unveiling of the official trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3. It had been leaked some months prior, but now it’s available for all to see in all its glory.
Check out the official trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3 below:
As teased in both The Mandalorian Season 2 finale “Chapter 16: The Rescue” and The Book of Boba Fett’s “The Return of the Mandalorian”, the trailer teases a return to Din Djarin’s home planet of Mandalore, which hasn’t been seen by fans since hit animated show Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008).
There, Din Djarin must prove himself worthy of becoming a true Mandalorian once more, having disgraced his people by removing his helmet on a number of occasions throughout the show. But there will undoubtedly be a number of obstacles in his way, with one of them being another Mandalorian.
Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff) will be returning, and we know that she’s after the Darksaber, which can only be won from Din Djarin through combat. But whether or not she will be the show’s primary antagonist this time remains to be seen, although she’s no stranger to switching over to the “dark side”.
As seen in The Clone Wars, Bo-Katan is a former member of terrorist cell Death Watch, and based on some of the things she said in The Mandalorian Season 2 alone, it’s plain to see that she believes it’s her birthright to lay claim to the throne of Mandalore, and will likely do anything to make sure it happens.
On the other hand, she is also guided by her moral compass, else she wouldn’t have helped Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) in The Clone Wars finale, which sees her aiding the Togruta Jedi in removing Maul (Sam Witwer) from power on Mandalore and incarcerating him.
The real question regarding this new storyline is whether or not it has the legs to last beyond The Mandalorian Season 3. The first two seasons were focused primarily on Din Djarin returning Grogu to his own kind - the Jedi - and though Grogu is back, the focus will likely shift to Din Djarin’s own struggles.
So, will The Mandalorian Season 3 be the last season? Well, you’ll be happy to know that, in May this year, Jon Favreau announced that he was writing a fourth season, adding that it was being “informed” by the upcoming live-action series Ahsoka (2023).
What this means is unclear, but it’s likely that, as both shows - as well as other interconnected shows such as The Book of Boba Fett - orbit the same period of time (the New Republic era/five years after the original Star Wars Trilogy), that it is being developed alongside Ahsoka, and may have some interconnectivity.
Disney and Lucasfilm have also previously stated that there would be an epic crossover event between these shows, and though we’ve seen Din Djarin and Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison) appear in each other’s show, and Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) also appear in both, we’re yet to see the three cross paths.
So, it looks like The Mandalorian Season 3 may focus entirely on Din Djarin’s battle with Bo-Katan. Perhaps then, The Mandalorian Season 4 will give us the epic Star Wars crossover we’ve been waiting for.
This is the way.
The Mandalorian Season 3 stars Pedro Pascal (Din Djarin/The Mandalorian), Giancarlo Esposito (Moff Gideon), Carl Weathers (Greef Karga), Katee Sackhoff (Bo-Katan Kryze), Emily Swallow (The Armorer), Omid Abtahi (Dr. Pershing), Amy Sedaris (Peli Motto), and Tim Meadows and Christopher Lloyd in undisclosed roles.
The Mandalorian Season 3 is set to be released on Disney+ in February 2023. Other live-action Star Wars shows such as The Book of Boba Fett (2021), Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022), the first two seasons of The Mandalorian (2019), and the brand-new series Andor (2022) are now available to stream on Disney+.
