Lady Chatterley’s Lover is one of the most controversial books of all time. In fact, it has been banned in the UK, the US, Australia, India, Japan, and Canada for being sexually explicit. The book was first published in Italy in 1928. The next year, it was published again in Paris. However, the publishers, Penguin, faced a trial under the Obscene Publications Act for its explicit sexual content and language. What followed next was a dramatic and highly publicized trial with Penguin earning the right to publish the book in November 1960. On the first day of publication, all 200,000 copies of the book were sold in bookshops throughout England. In the US, the book was banned for several years. The ban was revoked in 1959 after a US Court of Appeals judge overturned the ban and the obscenity laws responsible for it.
