Why Netflix’s Blonde Starring Ana De Armas is Rated NC-17
NC-17 rating means that no one under the age of 17 shall be admitted or allowed to see the movie given the said rating. This replaced the X rating of previous films. It is understood that no children shall be able to see any movie given an NC-17 rating for some violence, language, nudity, or sex in the scenes. Netflix’s Blonde was recently given a rating of NC-17, the first of its kind to be given such on the streaming platform. While Netflix already hosted some NC-17 rated movies, Blonde will be the first-ever Netflix Original. Blonde will follow the story of Norma Jeane Mortensen who became famous as Marilyn Monroe as she became a Hollywood actress in the 50s and 60s. It tackles the issues of the actress from love, exploitation, addiction, to abuse of power that she experienced in her life behind the screens.

Speaking with Screen Daily, the writer and director of Blonde, Andrew Dominik said, “It’s an NC-17 movie about Marilyn Monroe, it’s kind of what you want, right? I want to go and see the NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story.” Having an NC-17 rating is uncommon but there is a valid reason why Blonde got such a rating: there is a rape scene. Blonde is an adaptation of the novel of the same name written by Joyce Carol Oates which laid down the private life of Marilyn Monroe in a fiction. There will also be sensitive topics like drug abuse, abortion, graphic sex, and more. It can be expected that Netflix’s Blonde will also show explicit sex scenes and nudity which results to the NC-17 rating. Blonde recently participated in the Venice Film Festival this year where it received a 14-minute standing ovation. Netflix’s Blonde stars Ana de Armas as Marilyn Monroe, Adrien Brody as Arthur Miller, Bobby Cannavale as Joe DiMaggio, Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy, Julianne Nicholson as Gladys Pearl Baker, Xavier Samuel as Charles Chaplin Jr., Luke Whoriskey as Jame Dean, Michael Masini as Tony Curtis, Sara Paxton as Miss Flynn, and more. Netflix’s Blonde arrives on Netflix on September 28, 2022.
