If you’re thinking of traveling to Romania, you might want to include these filming locations of Wednesday in your itinerary:
Wednesday’s Former School
In the opening sequence of the show, we see Wednesday (played by Jenna Ortega) look for her brother, Pugsley (played by Isaac Ordonez), in their school. Later, Wednesday drops two bags of piranhas in the swimming pool to attack Pugsley’s bullies; which causes her to get expelled. It turns out this school is a real one and is known as the Politehnica University of Bucharest. The research institution was founded in 1818.
Meanwhile, the swimming pool where she dropped the piranhas into is a sports park in Bucharest called Bazinul de Înot Dinamo.
Nevermore Academy (Exterior)
First up, let’s talk about where they filmed the exterior scenes of the school. The producers took the whole cast and crew to Cantacuzino Castle in Busteni, Romania where they shot these scenes. This is a neo-Romanian fortress built in 1911 for Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, who was a two-time mayor of Bucharest and became the Romania’s Prime Minister between the late 1800s and early 1900s. For the show, the design of the castle’s roof was changed using CGI. But you can see for yourself since this castle is open for tours and visits.
Nevermore Academy (Interior)
Meanwhile, the interior shots of Nevermore Academy were filmed in Casa Monteoru in Bucharest, Romania. You can see the grand marble staircase and rooms in Wednesday, starting with the office of Principal Larissa Weems (played by Gwendoline Christie).
Train Station
Another Romanian location where they filmed Wednesday is the Gara Regala station in Sinaia. Sinaia is a town found in the Bucegi Mountains. It was once considered as the home of an affluent Romanian royal family.
Botanical Sciences Classroom
In one of the episodes of the show, Wednesday and Bianca (played by Joy Sunday) had a little parley over one of Ms. Thornhill’s (played by Christina Ricci) plants. This scene was shot at the Gradina Botanica Dimitrie Brândza or the Bucharest Botanical Garden. Named after its founder, Dimitrie Brândza, the garden was established in 1860 and has since been the home of different plants.
Gates’ Old Mansion
Episode 6 brings Wednesday to the old Gates’ mansion that was supposed to be abandoned for several years. But Wednesday discovers that someone actually lives in the mansion. This house is actually the Conacul Olga Greceanu, a historical landmark in Dâmbovita, Romania.
