Throughout Werewolf by Night, the hunters have been after one thing: the Bloodstone, and that would make whoever gets it the leader of them all. What is it, its origins, its powers, and why is it the only thing that has color throughout the Marvel special presentation when everything is in black and white?

What is the Bloodstone in Werewolf By Night?

The Bloodstone is a powerful relic is seen in Werewolf by Night that could determine whether one is a monster and could deflect any monster that comes on the way of its wielder. Verussa Bloodstone, widow of the late Ulysses Bloodstone, called upon a group of hunters which will be the pool to choose the new leader of the team. Given that Elsa Bloodstone has not appeared for a long time, she was stripped away of her right to inherit the relic but still given a chance to fight for it fair and square. The Bloodstone is said to subdue the monster’s abilities when it is attached to it, but it doesn’t totally eradicate it as Man-Thing, Ted, had it attached to him but he could still incarcerate anyone.

What are the Origins of the Bloodstone in Werewolf By Night?

The special presentation of Marvel didn’t delve much into the origins of the Bloodstone other than it being owned by the late Ulysses Bloodstone. In the comics, it is known as the Bloodgem, something that forms part of the Infinity Gems, similar to that of the Infinity Stones. The Bloodgem dates back to 8250 B.C. as it arrived on Earth on a meteorite, like that of how the heart-shaped herb arrived to Wakanda. The Bloodgem was sent by a group of god-like beings, the Exo-Mind, and they are even older than the universe itself. Their intention in creating it is for conquering alternate dimensions. To note, the Bloodgem that Ulysses Bloodstone acquired is not the whole stone, but rather, a fragment of it. That only means that the Bloodgem has already been destroyed, if not, diminished.

What Powers Do The Bloodstone Bestow Upon Its Wielder in Werewolf By Night?

As mentioned by Verussa, the Bloodstone gives its wielder a longer life, protection, and additional strength. With an incantation, Verussa managed to trigger the change of Jack Russell. Similar to the comics, the Bloodgem gives the one wielding it powers beyond human understanding. The Bloodgem has given Ulysses Bloodstone regenerative healing, superhuman durability and strength, energy blasts, and some kind of psychic abilities. Also, it makes him immune to vampires since the Bloodgem is, in itself, an anathema to vampires.

Why is the Bloodstone The Only Thing Colored in Werewolf by Night?

Throughout the Marvel special presentation, everything is in black and white until the Bloodstone was presented. It glows red, similar to the Reality stone, and in the end, when the night is over, everything goes colored. Since the intention of the creation of the Bloodgem is to conquer alternate universes, it could be theorized that, similar to the Reality stone, the Bloodstone may have affected the black-and-white colors throughout the night, thus, it is the only thing with color. When the quest over it ended and it finally has a new wielder with Elsa Bloodstone, the Bloodstone may, in itself, returned the colors, allowing everyone to see things better. But if that theory proves to be right, then it means the stone has some kind of consciousness. Who knows, maybe it’s just a creative touch but you’ll never know what surprises the MCU has in store!
