Speaking with Variety, Alfred Gough reveals how long they had been planning for Christina Ricci’s shocking villain role twist for the show. The co-showrunner expresses his worries behind the possibility of the twisted villain to be ‘too predictable’ to make the show work. Read his full quote below:
On the other hand, Gough highlights how the big-named actors on the show helped in casting away suspicions from Christina Ricci. By referencing Gwendoline Christie and Riki Lindhome, the co-showrunner casts possible questions the fans would speculate around the actors being the villain instead of Ricci.

It is great to see Christina Ricci sporting a different role on the Addams Family show. Otherwise, her role would have been marked simply for ‘nostalgia’ when in fact, her character contributes greatly to the show.
Quite contrary to her complexion and previous role as Wednesday Addams, the Thornhill twist put her in a daring spot of symbolically killing off the people’s image of her as being the ‘old’ Wednesday Addams in the series.
