The Old Guard is the breakout film that intrigued many viewers when it first came out in 2020. A couple of years later, we know we will get a sequel. Here is everything we know about the upcoming Netflix original The Old Guard 2.
The second The Old Guard movie does not have an official release date yet. If the second movie follows the same production schedule and release trend as the first movie, chances are, we may see the sequel around the summer 2023. We are guessing that the film will start streaming around July, with this premiere date hopefully working well with the sequel, since the first The Old Guard movie topped the charts when it was released around the same time in 2020.
When was The Old Guard 2 Announced?
News about a second The Old Guard movie came around in January 2021 but the franchise’s second film was only confirmed in August of the same year.
When will The Old Guard 2 start production?
The Old Guard 2 started production in June 2022. Several cast members celebrated the beginning of production by posting photos on their social media accounts.
The Old Guard never dies, so we will be seeing most of the original cast members return to play their characters in The Old Guard 2.
The Old Guard
Most of The Old Guard’s original members will return to protect humanity from pain and suffering. The cast is still led by Charlize Theron, who plays Andromache of Scythia, aka Andy. She will be joined by Kiki Layne as Nile, the newest member of the Guard, along with Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli as the star-crossed lover’s Joe and Nicky. We will also see Mattias Schoenaerts return to play Booker, who may or may not be loyal to Andy (we’ll have to wait and see), with Chiwetel Ejiofor as the team’s handler Copley.
Quynh
The first The Old Guard film was action-packed and filled with shocking revelations from start to finish. One of the most exciting reveals may be the introduction of Quynh, Andy’s long-lost comrade, and partner. At the end of the first movie, we learn that Quynh, who has been teased throughout the film, was still alive and free from their prison. Veronica Ngo, who played a minor role as Quynh in the first movie, will return to play the same immortal character and will now have a more significant involvement in the film. Comic book fans may wonder who Quynh is because, in the source material, Quynh’s character is a Japanese warrior named Noriko. The team opted to rename the character because Veronica Ngo was cast for the role, she said she was Vietnamese, not Japanese. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood reportedly reached out to creator Greg Rucka, asking if they could accommodate this difference. With Rucka’s blessing, the character’s name and ethnicity were then slightly tweaked.
New Cast Members in The Old Guard 2
The Old Guard 2 will have new cast members joining the mix, though we still do not know who their characters will be. Reports say that Uma Thurman and Henry Golding are taking part in the sequel, so we can expect to hear more updates about them in the future.
We may be seeing a new set of creatives working behind the scenes for The Old Guard 2. Gina Prince-Bythewood is passing on the helm to Victoria Mahoney for the sequel but will stay on as a producer. Mahoney made waves in the industry as the first Black woman to direct a Star Wars project when she worked as a second-unit director in The Rise of Skywalker. She also has other notable works like Queen Sugar and Lovecraft County. Greg Rucka, the creator of the comic book series that inspired the movie, will still be writing for the film.
There is still no official synopsis for The Old Guard 2, but we can guess the plot based on our information. One central plot point in the first movie is when Andy seemingly loses her immortality. This may play a significant factor in the second movie, because Andy now has to navigate their missions more carefully. The first film ended with Andy banishing Booker for a century because of his betrayal. The final scene shows us Booker in Paris six months later. He walks into his apartment, only to be greeted by Quynh, who only says, ‘It’s nice to finally meet you.’ Rucka already wrote a second The Old Guard graphic novel called Force Multiplied, which may inspire the second movie’s plot. In Force Multiplied, we learn Quynh’s new ideals – she believes she was made immortal to make humans suffer, not to save them from suffering. Quynh reunites with Andy because she wants Andy to work with her toward fulfilling her mission as a partner and as a lover. The Old Guard comic book also tells us about Noriko’s, aka Quynh, life before she finds Andy. We learn that she becomes a criminal kingpin, hell-bent on finding Andy, fueled by her anger and bitterness from being abandoned.
There is still no trailer for The Old Guard 2, but we can expect to see the trailer a few weeks before the film premieres on Netflix. In the meantime, here is the trailer for the first The Old Guard.
