Disney+’s The Falcon and The Winter Soldier introduced Wyatt Russell’s John Walker yet entirely interrupted his descent as an unsettling villain in the conclusion of the series. With that said, will we see a redemption arc for the U.S. Agent?
In an interview with Collider, Wyatt Russell opened up about his future in the MCU as the U.S. Agent, while also revealing his hopes for the character. When asked if he wants a continuation of a villainous path for John Walker, the actor responded, “I haven’t really even thought about, if the character comes back, what I hope he becomes. There are so many different ways that you can go with it. I just hope that whatever it is, is continued along this line of this struggle with self. That is something that I can do, as well as I think it needs to be done. As long as he has that conflict within himself, he can have a change of mind and he can go through therapy. There are lots of different ways you can go. I only ever hope that it goes an interesting way, but a certain way, that’s not up to me.“When directly asked if he is currently involved in a Marvel project, and if he is training in a secret Marvel camp, “No, you never know,” the actor admitted. “They do a really good job of keeping it secret. It’s part of the allure. You always hope that you can come back and you hope that you’ll get the phone call. If I pick up the phone and it’s Marvel on the other end of the line, you’re like, ‘All right, cool. Let’s go to work.’“For now, it’s safe to assume that Russell’s U.S. Agent will certainly return in the recently confirmed Thunderbolts movie. Aside from that, the conclusion of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier sees John Walker being recruited by Val, which makes it more evident that Marvel Studios isn’t done with his character. Just like what Russell uttered, ‘there are so many ways’ to continue U.S. Agent’s character arc.
Given the complexity and the grey area of whether the character will remain as a villain or apparently turn into a hero, Thunderbolts could extensively explore more of the character’s origins and motivation. If ever Russell is fortunate, his character might even have the opportunity to redeem himself and reclaim the hero title. The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is available to stream on Disney+.Also read: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Wyatt Russell Breaks Silence on Thunderbolts Movie Announcement
