However, unfortunately, the character has also become a subject of misogynistic hate and sexism from some of the fans and trolls, and now its actress Erin Moriarty took the matter into her own hands by calling it out on her latest Instagram post.
The actress reposted a fan article titled “#IStandWithStarlight?: The Betrayal of Erin Moriarty by The Boys Fans” written by Instagram user @butcherscanary that pointed out the misogynistic hate and sexism that Moriarty has received online as a result of playing the role of Starlight in the series.
“I do feel silenced. I do feel dehumanized. I do feel paralyzed. I’ve put blood, sweat, and tears into this role (over & over & over again), I’ve grown UP in this character’s shoes (*emphasis on grown up - we change & evolve mentally AND physically),” Moriarty wrote in the caption.
“So with that I say: a) thank you to @butcherscanary b) this does break my heart - I’ve opened up a vein for this role and this kind of trolling is exactly what this role (Annie) would speak out against and c) everyone’s going through their own battle(s); let’s not add to that. I will never intentionally (and ESPECIALLY) publicly add to yours.”
She concluded, “This has only strengthened my empathy muscle and to anyone who comes at me: I see you, I I don’t hate you, I only empathize and forgive.”
Moriarty’s co-stars in the series and colleagues in the industry have left comments in the post showing their love and support for the actress including Antony Starr, Jack Quaid, Chace Crawford, and Colby Minifie.
It is always unfortunate to hear situations like this happening and the actors don’t deserve to get all the hate and trolling from fans, especially because of what their respective characters represent in the story. It’s also nice to see Moriarty standing up and don’t let all the hate discourage her as she continues to play the role.
