It was confirmed in the She-Hulk: Attorney at Law teasers that Jennifer Walters will be breaking the fourth wall by addressing the viewers. It didn’t take long before people began comparing the act with Deadpool and some even pointed out that She-Hulk is copying the Merc with a Mouth.
However, the cast and crew of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is quick to defend the character (via CBR). Series creator Jessica Gao stated at a press conference that “If you know anything about She-Hulk the character, you would know that she [did that].” Tatiana Maslany then joked that “Deadpool copied She-Hulk” and not the other way around.
Jennifer Walters repeatedly broke the fourth wall in The Sensational She-Hulk during John Byrne’s 1989 run while Deadpool made his comic book debut in 1991. Either way, Tatiana Maslany says that breaking the fourth wall adds to Jennifer’s charm.
“I think that there’s something about She-Hulk’s awareness. Where she’s able to go from being Jen to She-Hulk with a seamlessness. Her consciousness stays the same, and she’s aware of the audience. That feels like it’s her superpower engaged with the meta element of the [show],” Maslany said.
“It’s like an extension of her superpower, she’s like, ‘I know I’m, talking to a camera,” she continued. “I know you guys are watching this.’ And there’s something about that super hyper-awareness that is [a part of] who she is.”
For now, Ryan Reynolds hasn’t made a comment about who did what first but there’s a possibility we’ll get a reference to She-Hulk in Deadpool 3.
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law premieres on Disney+ on August 18, 2022.
