The fourth season saw Nancy and Jonathan apart. Nancy spent most of her time with Steve while trying to solve the mystery surrounding Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). Things even got worse when Jonathan decided not to tell Nancy about his decision not to go to Emerson College, where they planned to attend together. The two appeared to become emotionally detached from each other and Nancy seemed to be eyeing Steve romantically after everything they had gone through in the previous season. The publication also suggested that Nancy and Jonathan might end up breaking up or there would be a love triangle between the three.

As Nancy seems torn between Jonathan and Steve, the Duffer brothers weighed in on the issue. Though they both remained neutral, not choosing between the two guys, the Duffers explained their reasons well to TVLine.
