In a recent interview with the Friends from Work podcast (via The Direct), Anu Valia, one of the directors of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, revealed that Thor: Ragnarok served as her inspiration for helming the series and discussed why she cited the beloved film as her influence when she was working on it. “And it’s funny because, as a fan, you also… you wanna do service to the fans, but you also wanna create something new and not come from a place of fear… Just from a place of story… in a truthful and funny way,” Valia said. “I feel like I was really… the comedic tone, balancing that and the emotional crux of the show, Jessica [Gao] and Kat [Coiro] laid such a groundwork that I just built off of that. But I know personally, I was looking, I feel everybody feels this way, I was looking to what Taika Waititi did with Thor[: Ragnarok]…”

She explained, “Like, he balanced that so well. I think that was maybe, out of the Marvel films, that was like the most forefront of my mind… Even the technical thing of like improvizing with a CGI character, that type of stuff. So personally, that movie was on my mind a lot. But I can’t say that I created the tone or anything, but it was sorta like building off.” Considering that Thor: Ragnarok had a largely comedic tone, it is not surprising to hear that the series took that as their inspiration on how they should balance the humor, action, and the usual MCU fare. After all, it is very challenging to properly balance different tones in a story. So far, based on most responses, the series has been doing well in balancing the tones and genres that they’re tackling and it would be interesting to see whether they will be able to maintain that until the finale.
