It is no surprise that fans would be curious if Velma’s sexuality had long been planned behind the works or if this was an arbitrary decision. The Tumblr post came from a fan asking if “Velma being gay [was] a thing back” or “if the Writing Staff of Yore were thinking about it at all” when former writer Diane had been working on Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo in 1979. The former writer responds it was never talked about previously. Read Diane’s reply below:
Seeing as the former writer admits Velma’s sexuality being a mystery even back then, The Sandman writer Neil Gaiman chimes in, as his son is a big fan of the show and could not resist sharing what he knows. Gaiman joined in the conversation by replying to Diane’s comment, saying that Velma’s version from the 2010 animated series Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated was definitely portrayed as bisexual since “she had a crush on Shaggy at the start of the first season” but then had been revealed to be in a relationship with Marcie (Velma was on a bed with Marcie, aka “Hot Dog Water” in season 1).
Gaiman added that not every incarnation of the Mystery gang involved romantic pursuits, referring to the next incarnation of Mystery Incorporated, Be Cool, Scooby-Doo (2015-2018), “None of them are dating anyone and Velma is a super brain with a fear of water.”
