In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Johnson reiterated that he is still eyeing making his Star Wars trilogy in the future once his schedule is cleared up and confirmed that he is continuously in active talks with Kennedy on the development of the project.
“I’ve stayed close to Kathleen [Kennedy] and we get together often and talk about it,” Johnson told the outlet. “It’s just at this point a matter of schedule and when it can happen. It would break my heart if I were finished, if I couldn’t get back in that sandbox at some point.”
Johnson is currently busy working on the Knives Out sequels (including Glass Onion which is set to release on Netflix this December) and the Peacock series Poker Face where he is serving as creator, writer, executive producer, and director.
As for the future of the Star Wars theatrical slate, Kennedy has revealed that Taika Waititi’s project is the next one in line while the other film projects still remain in active development. However, none of them are close to the production stage.
Ever since the project’s announcement, the details regarding Johnson’s trilogy have been kept under wraps and it is unknown whether it is set in a different era with new characters or it will be connected to the existing trilogies.
Considering that Johnson is in the midst of doing his multiple projects right now, it might take a few more years before we’ll get to see the project move forward if ever Lucasfilm is still interested in continuing the project. For now, all we know is that the project is still on its way despite the skepticism about its status.
