Since One Piece made its debut on July 22, 1997 in an issue of Weekly Shōnen Jump, over 1,000 chapters of the manga have been published, along with 95 volumes, and it’s still ongoing. One Piece is also one of the highest-selling manga of all time, outselling other popular titles like Naruto and Dragon Ball. This also makes the series one of the highest-grossing fictional franchises of all time, generating over $21 billion in revenue across its mangas, movies, video games, and various pieces of merchandise. The hit anime series, which hit its 1000th episode in November 2021, follows Monkey D Luffy and his trusty pirate crew on their mission to find the ultimate treasure and earn Luffy the title of Pirate King. One Piece is also available to stream on Netflix in some regions, and the movies are only available to watch on Netflix Japan. The live-action series was first announced in January 2020.

One Piece Netflix Release Date: When will it premiere?
Netflix hasn’t announced an official release date for the live-action One Piece yet, but the digital platform shared a message from the series’ creator Eiichiro Oda on its official Twitter account. The update reveals the progress towards a release date is being made, stating, “It’ll take a bit more time to get this show done, but we’ll continue to do our best to deliver a show that we’re confident will be enjoyed by everyone around the world! Look forward to more updates in the future!”
According to a report from Twitter outlet One Piece Live Action Fandom, the live-action One Piece is expected to release in mid-2023. However, Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed this release window. Netflix already released its schedule of upcoming films and TV shows in November 2022, and as expected, the live-action One Piece series will not be released next month.
Are there any production updates for Netflix’s live-action One Piece series?
The production for Netflix’s One Piece was originally set to kick off in Summer 2020 in Cape Town following the show’s initial announcement in January 2020, but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In March 2021, Maeda shared an update on social media to reassure fans that filming had resumed. “A year ago COVID kicked us out of our offices and delayed production. But we haven’t stopped working to bring @onepiecenetflix to life. Thanks for your patience, your questions, and many great suggestions,” he posted. In October 2021, showrunner Steven Maeda shared a photo of himself in Cape Town, alongside the word “arrival”. In January 2022, set photos from Cape Town Film Studios in South Africa appear to reveal a first look at the pirate ships being constructed for Netflix’s live-action One Piece series. The photos were taken by @Risebito and then shared by @OP_Netflix_Fan.
Updates: In January 2022, Production Weekly reported that the live-action One Piece will begin filming in the spring/summer of this year, with the filming set to take place in South Africa. At the end of that month, showrunner Steven Maeda shared a photo, teasing the beginning of the show’s production:
On Feb. 1, Netflix announced that production for the live-action One Piece series has officially begun. Over on Twitter, Netflix Geeked shared two photos of the cast, confirming the beginning of the show’s production in South Africa.
On May 9, episode director and executive producer Marc Jobst finished his work on the One Piece Netflix series. He shared a series of photos taken on set in South Africa to commemorate his work, and the filmmaker had nothing but love and gratitude to share for the Straw Hat crew.
One Piece Netflix Cast: Who’s playing who?
In November 2021, Netflix announced the cast of its live-action adaptation of One Piece. Iñaki Godoy will play the protagonist pirate Monkey D Luffy. The 18-years-old Mexican actor is best known for playing Bruno in Netflix’s Who Killed Sara? Alongside Godoy, joining his crew are Taz Skylar as Sanji, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Roronoa Zoro as Mackenyu. They are known as the Straw Hat Pirates. In March 2022, the actors playing the characters Koby, Alvida, Helmeppo, Buggy, Arlong, and Garp, have been announced:

It was announced that Peter Gadiot (Queen of the South, Yellowjackets) will play Shanks, the head of the Red Hair pirates. He is expected to portray Shanks as a younger man when the Netflix series goes live.
Twitter user One Piece Live Action News captured a now-deleted Instagram post from Jean Henry that revealed that he will be playing “Double Ironfist” Fullbody in Netflix’s live-action adaptation.

In July 2022, actor Peter Gadio shared a photo to his Instagram story from the set. As you can see in the tweet below, the actor is seen only in silhouette as the ocean stands before him. The black-and-white photo reveals an outline of Gadio’s character in costume given his long coat.
The official Twitter account for the show revealed that young actor Corlton Osorio will join the cast and play the young version of Luffy.
One Piece Plot - What will the story of Netflix’s live-action adaptation be about?
Set in an alternate version of Earth, in the midst of the Golden Age of Pirates, ruthless pirates rule the seas, battling it out to claim the mythical treasure known as “One Piece”, which once belonged to the greatest pirate of all times, Gol D. Roger. Years after the death of Roger, a young boy named Monkey D. Luffy has dreams of raising his own crew, and go in a quest to find One Piece, and declare himself as Pirate King. After consuming a devil fruit, Luffy is bestowed the power to make his body resemble rubber, granting him the strength to set sail across the dangerous seas and battle to become the next Pirate King. Season 1 will follow the events of One Piece’s East Blue Saga and unite the Straw Hat Pirates for the first time. In January 2022, a pirate ship has been spotted in the set of the show, and it looks like “Miss Love Duck”, a vessel that has a giant duck head on the front of the ship, which is being commanded by the villain Alvida. She is the first major villain that Luffy faces in the original manga series, and it looks like the show will introduce her.

Is One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda involved in the live-action series?
Yes, Eiichiro Oda, the creator of One Piece, is involved in the production of Netlfix’s live-action series. During a talk with the Gayest Episode Ever, Ted Biaselli, the director of Netflix Originals, admitted that Eiichiro Oda is very involved in the series. “We’re working directly with Eiichiro Oda who is the creator. You know, he’s got a vision, and he’s never worked in television so there’s this give and take in education of what works in live-action and what doesn’t work. He’ll tell us we’re missing the point, that [this thing] isn’t what this scene is about. Then we’ll all go, oh, okay,” Biaselli said.
