In case you missed its reveal, Mashle (or Mashle: Magic and Muscles) is an upcoming anime series by A-1 Pictures that’s based on the ongoing manga of the same name by Hajime Komoto. The manga started serialization on January 27, 2020, in Weekly Shonen Jump. Since its release, the series has received praise for its comedic concept and fun story and has become a sales hit. Aside from being nominated at the 2021 Shogakukan Manga Awards, Mashle’s first volume got sold out when it was released. As of March 2022, the manga has over 3 million copies in circulation, making it a big enough hit that it is getting an anime series adaptation.
The series is set in a world of magic where a person’s magical abilities define their place in society. In this world, those born without magic are purged. One such person is Mash Burnedead, the series’ protagonist. Mash lives a peaceful life with his adoptive father, Regro. But he is soon found to have no magic, and his peaceful life is threatened. Because of this, Mash enrolls in the Easton Magic Academy with the aim of becoming a Divine Visionary, a person that has a powerful role in society.
One of the biggest reveals at Aniplex Online Fest 2022 regarding this anime is the main voice actor. Specifically, Chiaki Kobayashi is the voice of Mash in the upcoming anime. Kobayashi is known for voicing Makoto Edamura in Great Pretender and Yuuichi Katagiri in Tomodachi Game. As for its staff, the series is directed by Tomoya Tanaka of Engage Kiss fame. Joining him are scriptwriter Yousuke Kuroda, character designer Hisashi Toshima, and music composer Masaru Yokoyama. Right now, there’s no word yet on a specific release date or episode count for Mashle, though it is set to release sometime in 2023.
