Specifically, Febri released the first of a new multi-part interview with Asaura, the show’s writer. In the interview, Asaura revealed the inspiration behind various parts of the series, including the traditional Japanese café.
LycoReco café serves as an important setting in the series as it’s where most of the main characters work and interact outside of the action-packed firefights. While it’s a fully functional café, it also serves as an undercover DA outpost. In case you need a refresher, the series is set in an alternate version of Japan that’s protected from terrorists and criminals by “Lycoris” agents. These agents take down bad guys unbeknownst to the public. The story follows the Lycoris agent Takina who is demoted for disobeying orders. She finds herself transferred to LycoReco café to serve alongside Chisato, an expert agent who is happy-go-lucky and refuses to take the life of criminals. Takina and Chisato are opposites in terms of personality, but Takina must do her best to get along with Chisato. Soon though, while working in the café, the two become closer to each other. When asked about the show’s Tokyo setting, Asaura revealed that he used to live in downtown Tokyo and that he used to meet his editors at cafés around Kinshicho in Tokyo. In that area, there are a lot of Japanese cafés. Because of this, Asaura decided to make the LycoReco café similar to the cafés that he frequented during his time working in downtown Tokyo. While it wasn’t made to have a traditional look for story reasons, the traditional style of the café worked as a nice contrast to the high-tech base of the DA along with the more futuristic parts of Tokyo. Lycoris Recoil (also known as LycoReco by fans) is an original anime series by A-1 Pictures that’s directed by Shingo Adachi and written by Asaura. The series stars Chika Anzai as Chisato Nishikigi and Shion Wakayama as Takina Inoue. New episodes of LycoReco are released every week on Crunchyroll.
