The Lycoris Recoil stage play was announced just last month, and along with its production dates, the main cast was also announced. Though in the previous reveal, the cast wasn’t shown in costume yet.

Anime Stage Plays’ Popularity

As one of the surprise hits of the Summer 2022 season, it should come as no surprise that Lycoris Recoil (aka LycoReco) is getting a stage adaptation. After all, many popular anime get play adaptations when they become hits. In Japan, stage plays based on hit anime shows are popular, though it’s not fair to compare them to something like a Shakespeare production. Instead, these shows often feature unique technology that is used to enhance the viewers’ immersion. On top of this, some anime stage plays even become musicals, even if their source material does not feature any songs. For instance, an Attack on Titan stage play was announced a few months ago, and it was revealed to be a musical. While it’s hard to imagine the likes of Eren and Mikasa singing, such is the case when it comes to anime plays. The popularity of these shows in Japan is so big that the hit manga series Oshi no Ko features a storyline where a hit manga series is being turned into a stage production.
