The memorial video shares special messages to those who were affected and honors those who have tragically lost their lives in the attack. Back on July 18, 2019, a fire broke out in the Kyoto Animation Studio 1 Building. The fire was an arson attack that killed 36 people and injured 34 others, including the suspect. The suspect is a 41-year-old man who started the fire by pouring 40 liters of gasoline inside the premises. According to several reports, the suspect admitted to starting the fire, possibly for revenge as he accused the studio of plagiarizing his work. The arson attack also destroyed most of the materials and computers in Kyoto Animation Studio 1. Though the studio was able to recover some of the data from a server that survived the fire. Kyoto Animation paused its production work following the fire. In July 2021, Kyoto Animation released Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid S – its first work since the arson attack. In case you’re unfamiliar, Kyoto Animation is an anime studio that was founded in July 1985. The studio is popularly known among anime fans as “KyoAni.” The studio has worked on lots of shows that have become the iconic anime of the 2000s, including Full Metal Panic, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, and Clannad. Kyoto Animation continued to be one of Japan’s most well-known anime studios in the 2010s, releasing hit shows such as Sound! Euphonium, Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, and Violet Evergarden.
