Jurassic World: Dominion has made a huge impact at the global box office. In fact, so big that it was probably preceded by vibrations in soda cups throughout movie theaters all around the world.
As at Monday July 11, the film has made over $876 million worldwide, making it the third highest-grossing movie of 2022 so far, behind Top Gun: Maverick (2022) - number one - and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022).
You might think that these numbers are easy pickings for a Jurassic World movie, especially when you consider that Jurassic World (2015) and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) made a combined $2.9 billion globally.
However, there has been a lot standing in the way of Jurassic World: Dominion’s success, as the film has been ravaged by critics (and many fans too), not unlike one of the franchise’s many unsuspecting dinosaur victims.
Perhaps this proves that word-of-mouth isn’t particularly effective against major blockbuster franchises, or maybe the critics are simply being unfair (many reviews do seem incredibly nit-picky at best).
Either way, Jurassic World: Dominion is on track to follow in the dinosaur-sized footsteps of its two predecessors and pass the $1 billion-mark. With that said, it still has quite a long way to go.
Mathematically, the rest is likely spare change, but in terms of competition, it has quite a lot of work to do if it’s going to overtake Top Gun: Maverick and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The Tom Cruise-led action sequel grossed over $1.1 billion, while the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s 28th film came in just shy of $1 billion with $953 million. Needless to say, the next week or so is going to be very interesting.
Speaking of Marvel, while it falls very far behind in terms of its release, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022) is now out in theaters, so it’s possible that Jurassic World: Dominion will end up being sandwiched between two MCU movies.
In fact, despite having only been released on July 8, the Thor sequel has already grossed $302 million worldwide, making it the tenth highest-grossing movie of 2022. But what currently sits between both films?
In fourth place we have The Batman (2022), followed by The Battle at Lake Changjin II (2022), Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore (2022), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Uncharted (2022), and Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022), respectively.
It’s highly likely that a movie like Thor: Love and Thunder will overtake, at the very least, everything perhaps with the exception of The Batman, so it looks like Jurassic World: Dominion may have quite a fight on its hands.
Neverthless, the film is on track to pass $1 billion, and perhaps even overtake Top Gun: Maverick as the highest-grossing film of 2022. And should this be the case, Universal may wish to revise it being the last film in the series.
