Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Reckoning Games Release New Teasers At D23
The official synopsis for the film has already been released. As per 20th Century Studios, here’s the short blurb for Avatar 2: The Way of Water: Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family, the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure. While it’s deliberately brief and vague, it does give us some idea as to what to expect. However, in a recent interview with IGN, the Titanic (1997) director says that we won’t be able to predict Avatar: The Way of the Water’s story. Here’s what he said: “I guarantee you, you won’t be able to predict it. What people hate the most is to go and see a movie and say ‘oh… predictable.’ This is not predictable, I don’t think. I defy anybody to predict where this story goes.”
Though it made something in the region of $3 billion dollars worldwide, the original Avatar (2009) is often criticized for having a paper-thin, cliche-ridden plot. Whether or not you think so too, it is a fairly predictable film. However, it sounds like Cameron is confident that Avatar: The Way of Water will be nothing like its predecessor from a narrative point of view. And this is no doubt a good thing, as there are another three sequels on the way. As such, the upcoming sequel will most likely end on some sort of cliffhanger, but now that Cameron has promised the film will defy expectations, audiences will probably come to expect a lot more than just breath-taking visuals.
Not much is known about Avatar 3, Avatar 4, or Avatar 5 at present, other than the fact that production on the third film is almost complete. We also know that several cast members have signed on for most of the franchise. However, it’s entirely possible that Cameron is referring to the wider story, which will of course transcend Avatar: The Way of Water. With that said, he did previously say that each film will be “stand alone”.
James Cameron also recently spoke out about the upcoming open-world game Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora (TBA), which he seems equally excited about. As per the official Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora website, here’s the synopsis for the game: Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora™ is a first person, action-adventure game developed by Massive Entertainment – a Ubisoft studio, in collaboration with Lightstorm Entertainment and Disney.Built using the latest iteration of the Snowdrop engine, and developed exclusively for the new generation of consoles and PC, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora brings to life the alluring world of Pandora with all of its beauty and danger in an immersive, open world experience. In this new, standalone story, play as a Na’vi and embark on a journey across the Western Frontier, a never-before-seen part of Pandora. Explore a living and reactive world inhabited by unique creatures and new characters, and push back the formidable RDA forces that threaten it. Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora will be released on PlayStation 5, Windows for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Google Stadia.
Avatar: The Way of Water stars Sam Worthington (Jake Sully), Zoe Saldana (Neytiri), CCH Pounder (Mo’at), Giovanni Ribisi (Parker Selfridge), Joel David Moore (Dr. Norm Spellman), Dileep Rao (Dr. Max Patel), Matt Gerald (Corporal Lyle Wainfleet), Sigourney Weaver, and Stephen Lang. Avatar 2: The Way of Water is scheduled for release in theaters on December 16. It will be released exclusively in theaters, as well as in the following formats - Dolby Cinema, IMAX, and IMAX 3D formats. Prior to the release of Avatar: The Way of Water, a re-mastered version of Avatar (2009) will be re-released in movie theaters. Re-mastered elements include picture and sound. Screenings will begin on September 23, 2022. Avatar 3 will release on December 20, 2024. Avatar 4 will follow on December 18, 2026, and Avatar 5 on December 22, 2028, respectively.
