What is The Handmaid’s Tale?
The Handmaid’s Tale is a dystopian novel written by Margaret Atwood, a Canadian writer. The novel was first published in 1985. The novel was set in the near dystopian future, in the Republic of Gilead, a theocratic and totalitarian state that was established to replace the United States of America. The population in the Republic was low, and only a selected few had the capability to reproduce, so a Handmaid (a fertile woman) was assigned to a couple who was having difficulties conceiving. Offred is one of these Handmaids, and she was assigned to the Commander and his wife, Serena Joy. Every month, at the right time of her cycle, Offred is taken to the Commander to participate in ritualistic sex with Serena Joy holding her hands. Offred eventually gets pregnant, but when her daughter was taken from her, Offred starts to oppose the regime.
