Now that millions of fans already know that Squid Game Season 2 is coming, they have been wondering if the sophomore season will arrive on Netflix in 2022 or if they’ll have to wait longer.
Will Squid Game Season 2 arrive in 2022?
At the time of this article’s initial publication, Netflix hasn’t announced the release date for Squid Game Season 2, but in January 2022, the streaming giant has already officially renewed the survival drama for a second season. However, Squid Game Season 2 will not be released in 2022. The show’s creator Hwang Dong-hyuk also confirmed to the Associated Press that a new season is in the works, but they’re still on the early planning stages. During Netflix’s fourth-quarter 2021 earnings interview, Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos was asked if the streaming giant’s breakout series would return for its much-speculated Season 2. “Absolutely,” he responded. “The Squid Game universe has just begun.”
“There’s been so much pressure, so much demand and so much love for a second season. So I almost feel like you leave us no choice!” Hwang said. “But I will say there will indeed be a second season. It’s in my head right now. I’m in the planning process currently. But I do think it’s too early to say when and how that’s going to happen.” Due to the director/writer having reservations about producing a new season at a rushed pace, it’s likely that Squid Game Season 2 won’t arrive in 2022. On March 19, 2022, Hwang spoke to Deadline about Squid Game Season 2: “There will be more great games, that’s all I can say.” Hwang said “I’m just still brainstorming and collecting the ideas for Season 2. I haven’t even started with the writing yet.” In September 2021, Hwang told Variety about the creative process it would take for him to develop Squid Game Season 2: “It is quite tiring just thinking about it [season 2],” Hwang said prior to Season 2 being confirmed. “But if I were to do it, I would certainly not do it alone. I’d consider using a writers room and would want multiple experienced directors.” With this in mind, it’s unlikely that Squid Game Season 2 will arrive in 2022 or even 2023, but with the confirmation that planning stage has already begun, it’s likely that production will begin sometime next year. In May 2022, Hwang told Vanity Fair that he predicts that the next season won’t be ready for release until the end of 2023 at the earliest, and it’s more likely that Season 2 will be released on Netflix in 2024. As expected, Squid Game Season 2 is not included in the list of films and TV shows coming to Netflix in November 2022. In June 2022, Netflix announced a new reality show based on Squid Game, called The Challenge, giving fans of the franchise another reason to get hyped. Since production for Squid Game Season 2 is clearly far from over, don’t expect a full trailer to hit the webs anytime soon. However, Netflix already released a teaser reminding fans that Season 2 is on its way.
