The A Song of Ice and Fire creator has posted an end-of-year update on his blog and once again confirmed that he is working on The Winds of Winter as well as House of the Dragon Season 2. Martin then dropped an update on the other Game of Thrones “successor shows”. “Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon,” Martin wrote. He then revealed some surprising news.
“A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly,” Martin wrote. This isn’t exactly surprising news considering that HBO had previously shelved a Game of Thrones spin-off. The pilot for Bloodmoon was already filmed and completed before the network decided not to move forward with the project. Martin himself had not seen the pilot. The confirmed Game of Thrones successor shows include Snow, which will follow Jon Snow after the events in the main show’s final season; 10,000 Ships which is about Princess Nymeria, the Dunk and Egg series, and a show that will follow Corlys Velaryon aka the Sea Snake. There are also two animated shows in development, one of which will be set in Yi Ti, a nation in Essos. House of the Dragon Season 2 has not yet been given an official release date. Stay tuned for more updates on this story.
