Speaking with Yahoo Entertainment at D23 (via The Direct), Cheadle was asked about when he might leave his War Machine armor behind and possibly retire in the MCU just like some of the actors during the franchise’s earlier years. While he said that he “takes it as it lies,” he iterated that he is still interested to remain in the franchise due to the opportunity for his character. “I just kinda take it as it lies, you know what I mean? This is something that was pitched to me, was something they wanted to do, and it was interesting and sounded fun. An opportunity to actually do more with this character. So yeah, I’m in,” Cheadle said.
“You know, at this point… we know there’s going to be more opportunities to do it, nobody’s [twisting] anybody’s arm. It’s like, does this sound like something that would be fun? Is this something where we could really do something that is exciting and is interesting? Cause if not, we don’t need to show up.” Cheadle is already confirmed to appear in upcoming series such as Secret Invasion and Armor Wars, where he is set to be the lead. Based on Marvel Studios’ plans so far, it looks like Rhodey is still very much involved in its future and will still play a pivotal role in years to come despite Tony Stark’s absence. The actor also recently revealed that he no longer has a contract with Marvel Studios which also just shows that he is still very much interested and committed to being part of the franchise despite not being tied with it contractually.
