Following the success of Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, a second season was announced in March 2007, and it’s called Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, which was released on April 6, 2008, on TBS and MBS channels. The second season had the same amount of episodes as the first. A recap film trilogy by Funimation was released, but the anime franchise is not over yet. Code Geass Plot: What happened in the first two seasons?
Code Geass is set in an imagined Orwellian world where power is distributed among the three superpowers: the Holy Britannian Empire, the European Union (also called Europa United), and the Chinese Federation. The story revolves around Lelouch vi Britannia (voiced by Jun Fukuyama in the Japanese version, Johnny Yong Bosch in the English) of the Britannian Empire, an outcast prince also known as Lelouch Lamperouge. While attending the Ashford Academy, he meets a mysterious girl named C.C. (Yukana/Kate Higgins) who grants him the power to command anyone to do whatever he wants — which is known as the Power of Kings, or Geass. Lelouch uses this power to strategize in war and track down his mother’s killers, which which was so tragic that his sister becomes blind and loses the ability to walk. The robots known as ‘Knightmare Frames’ are used in battle, and Japan is attacked by these mechs, starting an uncalled-for invasion. These mechs obliterate the area, forcefully annexing it and naming Japan Area 11. Lelouch intends to get revenge against the empire for their wrongdoing. Furthermore, he promises his childhood friend Suzaku Kururugi to free Japan from tyrannical machinations, but they end up going against each in numerous battles. Initially, he fights specific mecha battles for personal reasons to save himself, but ultimately, he forms a radical “Black Knights” rebel group to liberate his empire.

While the movies are considered recaps of the series, there are various key plot changes that create inconsistencies in the universe of Code Geass. This is why it’s still unclear if the new series will be a direct sequel to the second season of the show, or be based on the timeline of the film trilogy. Monsters & Critics provided an explanation about this confusion While the story of the new Code Geass series is still under wraps, it’s likely that we could see backstories of various characters, since it’s still unclear if Lelouch will be directly involve in the new series.

Will Lelouch vi Britannia return in Code Geass Season 3?
At the end of Code Geass Season 2, Lelouch pulled the plan known as Zero Requiem, in which Suzaku (apparently) publicly executed Lelouch, freeing the world form his tyrannical rule, and ultimately creating peace. However, there are several fan theories that claim that Lelouch is actually alive. At the end of the second season, Nunnally vi Brittania becomes the Empress of the Holy Empire of Brittania, and many of the key characters are still alive. Code Geass: Z of the Recapture might somehow bring back Lelouch to life, but since plot details are still unclear, we still don’t know if the beloved antihero will return in the new season.
