Chapter 103 of Chainsaw Man is heavily self-referential and perhaps somewhat influenced by the manga’s own fandom. Meanwhile, Denji is all too pleased about Chainsaw Man’s fame and he thoroughly enjoys being in the spotlight to the point of nearly revealing his identity to the world. Others, of course, would rather he did no such thing. Soon, Denji is approached by Hirofumi Yoshida who offers him food - a known way to get Denji to do one’s bidding. Denji doesn’t recognize Yoshida and, of course, accepts the invitation and gets a whole cake, among other delicacies. Denji confesses that he keeps acting as the Chainsaw Man because he enjoys fame and hopes that girls will fall for him if his identity is discovered. Yoshida, who goes to the same school Denji now also attends, claims that his organization is working to keep Chainsaw Man’s identity a secret to grant him a peaceful life. Of course, the real reason behind Yoshida’s interest is, for now, a secret, so we’ll have to wait for the next chapter to hopefully discover more! Fans have had interesting reactions to the newest chapter. One reader tweeted about how Denji visibly “wants to have his cake and eat it too.” This can be read both literally and metaphorically. Chainsaw Man likes to play with shonen anime conventions. In many cases, these boil down to the fact that heroes must not reveal their identity under no circumstances as this could create chaos. But Denji isn’t that hero. He wants to keep his superpowers AND live a normal life, which is going to make for an interesting conflict.
