Can Loki Lift Thor’s Hammer?
In the words of Odin, inscribed on the Mjölnir, it says, “Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor.” There have been a lot of debates on how the Mjölnir determines who is worthy and who is not. Even the heroes in the MCU get confused as to how the enchantment works, with Tony Stark even arguing that the elevator may be worthy because it can, technically, lift the Mjölnir. For now, there are two ways with the Mjölnir: lift it or wield it. Those who lift it may be able to do so but cannot possess the power that the Mjölnir has. Vision was able to lift it, to everyone’s surprise, in Age of Ultron, but not use its power, because possibly, the Mjölnir detects him like another inanimate thing. The same logic applies to Magneto who can lift the Mjölnir but only by tapping into its metallic composition. Those who wield the Mjölnir, however, is a different topic. This requires being worthy. In Endgame, Thor himself suspected that Captain America may possibly be worthy to wield the Mjölnir and true to his gut, Captain America is worthy enough that he can not only lift the Mjölnir, he can also summon the power of Thor to produce or call lightning from the hammer.

For Loki, his case is different. Yes, Loki was able to lift Thor’s hammer in the comics. Loki lifted the hammer at a time before Odin put an enchantment on it, when it is, technically, just a plain hammer and nothing magical yet. It was in the MCU as well in the first Thor movie, in a deleted scene. In the Axis crossover in the comics, an inverted spell also allowed Loki to lift the Mjölnir and this time, he was worthy because at such a time, Thor was deemed unworthy, and upon the reversion spell taking effect, Loki’s worthiness ended, too. There is, however, one scene in the Loki series that points to a variant of Loki being able to lift and wield the Mjölnir. This variant seems to be a combination of Thor and Loki and the hammer he holds is the Mjölnir’s variant as well. It’s complicated, to say the least, when it comes to the Mjölnir but for the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder, a new wielder is in the picture with Jane Foster and the reforged Mjölnir. This time, Jane is worthy. In the eye of Thor (sorry for the pun), Loki is now dead but with the Loki series happening, is it possible that the brothers will reunite once more? Loki Season 1 is now streaming on Disney Plus. Season 2 is still under production and has no release date yet.
