Must-Read: Why is Isekai Anime So Popular Right Now?
What is Black Summoner All About?
Black Summoner follows Kelvin, a man who was mistakenly killed by a god and was then reincarnated into an unknown game-like fantasy world as compensation. Kelvin learns from Melfina, the Goddess of Reincarnation, that his former self had chosen to let go of all memories prior to the reincarnation in exchange for top-tier skills and buffs in this new world. Melfina, who claims to have caught the eye of the former Kelvin and then formed a pact with him at his begging, now sits as a voice in Kelvin’s head. He would first need to increase his magic power and actual rank before he could summon Melfina or even take a peek into her stats. With Melfina’s guidance, Kelvin navigates this new world, completing one quest after another and forming more pacts so he could climb the ranks and finally use his skills to the fullest. Episode 2 of Black Summoner introduced Kelvin’s third Follower, after Melfina and Clotho. Gerard, the Black Spirit Knight, was a great knight who once protected a now-fallen kingdom. The downfall was revealed to have been caused by a greedy empire that wouldn’t take no for an answer. Gerard’s strong resolve to avenge his king, his kingdom, and his family turned him into a living dead too strong that defeating him was known to be especially difficult even for a Class D quest. Even so, the Black Spirit Knight was no match for the effective combination of Kelvin’s skills, Melfina’s strategic guidance, and the evolved Clotho who was now a Slime Gluttonia. Episode 2 also featured the first real combat in the series, which made quite effective use of CG, albeit a little jarring at the beginning. This choice was probably risky, given the not-so-good history other anime have had with CGI, but it proved worth it with how most viewers reacted positively to it. The creative use of CG for the battle, in addition to the smart directing and storyboarding, exceptional music scoring, and natural pacing have all earned Black Summoner the nod of even those who were most skeptical about yet another isekai. The show’s great opening song and chill ending theme were a very welcome bonus. Fans have high hopes that from here on out, Black Summoner (known as Kuro no Shoukanshi in Japan) will only get better.
