Sam Worthington recently spoke to Empire about Avatar: The Way of Water and not surprisingly, the other sequels were brought up in the interview. Interestingly, Worthington admitted that he had already been told what would happen to Jake Sully in the next three sequels. “There’s only a handful of us who know all the story,” he said. Worthington then added that it was essential that he saw how Jake changed throughout the film series.
“To me, it was very important that there’s a progression of character, that the character wasn’t Jake from the first one in the second, the third, the fourth and fifth film like you see in some films,” he said. “To me, the hero has to evolve as well. So, you have identifying features from the original, his spirit, his rebellious nature towards things, his never-give-up attitude,” Worthington added. “But the biggest thing for me was that his behaviour has to be reshaped by what’s happening around the world.” He then shared how Jake will be different in the subsequent films. “By the time you get to three, he’s still Jake, but he’s going to evolve from two and by the time he gets to four, he would have evolved even more in different directions. That to me was what was interesting. I didn’t just want this carbon copy,” Worthington said.
It’s great to know that Sam Worthington is well aware of how his character’s story will progress and eventually end. In the meantime, we can’t wait for Jake’s return in the second film. Avatar: The Way of Water hits theaters on December 16, 2022.
